There is definitely a move away from fascinators. It is not sufficient to have a couple of feathers on a hair band. Large disc pieces are become more popular. Monochrome is all over the cat-walks this season.

How can visitors to Ladies Days work this into their outfit?

Monochrome is relatively easy to work into an outfit as a black or black and white headpiece is something that is widely available and won’t date.

What attributes do you think a winning Ladies Day hat has?

I think a winning headpiece is something that enhances the beauty of the wearer. It should highlight her good points, for example bring out the colour of her eyes or draw your attention to her smile. A winning headpiece should work seamlessly with her outfit and have a wow factor.

What’s the biggest difference between winter and summer hats for the races?

Well obviously we see a lot of Felt hats at Winter race meetings. Felt is a fabulous material to work with. Generally winter headpieces tend to be smaller. Pheasant feathers also tend to feature strongly in Winter Hat collections.  Straw and other summer materials tend to be lightweight; allowing the milliner to be able to create larger headpieces.

Aoife Harrison - Red Sinamay Headpiece with Red Swirls - High ResWhat tips would you give to women when choosing the right hat for them?

  • Choose something that is in proportion to you.
  •  If you are meeting and greeting a lot of people don’t have something with a huge brim that covers half your face as it will annoy you and get in your way.
  • Choose a hat that you feel good in. If you are not confident in a hat it will show. You have to be able to pull it off if it is a fashion piece.

Why do you think hats are so popular for the races?

Women love to wear hats to the races because it completes an outfit. We instantly stand taller and carry ourselves differently when we have a hat on. We love an excuse to get dressed up and have a day out.  We also stop to admire a girl in a great hat at the races and we tend to feel not fully dressed if we don’t have a hat on ourselves.

Aoife is delighted to announce the launch of her new website: www.aoifeharrisondesign.ie which is a showcase of her work. Commenting at the launch Aoife said: “I am so excited with the launch of my website.  It allows me to showcase my collections to a wider audience, displaying my unique designs and highlighting the individual nature of my service.  Due to my belief that a hat, as well as being a necessary fashion accessory, also should express the wearer’s personality, I consider it very important that each of my hats is a bespoke creation for the individual wearer.  I believe a hat should have a playful feel while retaining a classic elegance to complete a stylish look.”

Edel Staunton With the summer racing season truly kicked off by Punchestown, there’ll always be another race meeting to be prepared for. With standing out from the crowd becoming increasingly difficult, a good hat really does go far to peel you away from the tote stands and onto the Best Dressed Lady stage.

Milliner Edel Staunton shares her top tips for choosing the perfect barnet-topper for this racing season.

Top Tips When Choosing a Hat

There are a few factors that need to be taken into account:

  • For brides who want something a little different.

For brides who want something a little different.

    The height of the person

  • The shape of her face
  • Your own colouring needs to be taken into account when choosing the colour of the hat.

What attributes do you think a winning Ladies Day hat has?

They don’t always have to be big and flamboyant. I think the hat has to suit the person and then complement the outfit. Generally it’s the combination of the whole look and the fact that the lady feels comfortable wearing it.

Build your outfit around your hat

In my case I would always build the outfit around the hat but generally it is easier to find a hat to go with the outfit. Especially if you are having something made the milliner can choose to use colours or details in the outfit and incorporate them into the hat. Hats really add the finishing touch to an outfit and can add the wow factor needed to a really simple outfit.

What’s hot for Summer 2013?

Disk style hats are huge at the moment, often the inside of these can be as nice as the outside.

About Edel

Edel Staunton Milliner - AW'12 Red base with roses and dramatic black crin and feather detail €220After starting a visually-lead career in Graphic Design , Edel retreated across the Shannon to Dublin from Mayo 15 years ago. Attending several evening courses in jewelry design, water colours, acrylics she was constantly seeking an artistic outlet. She caught the millinery bug in 201o where a one day course struck gold.

“Initially I made pieces for friends and family but I was then approached by a local boutique to stock my pieces and it really has just grown from there.”

After making a piece for Rásái na Gaillimhe 2 drama on TG4 (based around Galway race week) last year she’s currently working on a whacky piece for a large corporate company in Ireland for the launch of a new product (but she’s keeping mum and won’t let us in on who this is!)

Her main clients are Mother of the Bride/Groom and race goers, but she also has the knack of creating something extra special for brides who want to try something different to a traditional veil.

Edel Staunton 2011-18 - Web“I would like to think that my style is elegant and sophisticated. I don’t like too much fuss and would always believe less is more,” she told LadiesDayIreland.com.

Finding a vintage piece of lace or an unusual brooch or shade are just some examples she gives for where her inspiration comes from. ” I just design a piece around these.”

She uses traditional millinery techniques, “which involves using wooden hat blocks to shape the piece and then embellish in lace, ribbon, sequins, beading or whatever I fancy. Lots of sewing!”
