Traditional Lady

Hourglass curves and cinched waists, ladylike glamour is the bread and butter of this year’s Autumn Winter trends.

Combined with girlish pastels, purples and pinks, race day fashion will be more in line with mainstream trends than has been seen over the last years.

With designers revisiting country classic tweed, plaid and corduroy jackets, the uniform of the National Hunt season can be an inspiration to any trend conscious girl.  Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Paul Smith all made the runways scream racetrack glamour, like your old aunt Beatrice pulled out to go with her red lipstick.

Whilst our focus has been dropped to the hips in our summer love affair with the Great Gatsby, Dior, Rodarte and Dolce & Gabbana are pointing our eyes sharply at the waist for the winter, so if investing in a new winter coat choose one that cinches you in wasp-like.

Cool and Collected

Conversely as trends tend to sit together, the oversized androgynous look has been popular with cocoon coats, billowing trousers and pillow-sleeved jackets. It’s the cooler, yet much braver alternative to a neatly belted coat. As seen at Chloe and Balenciaga.

Dressing for the races can all too often become overly formulaic, so those heading for Best Dressed Competitions may be better placed to work some of the less traditional trends into their race day look.

Swap your Thai takeaway for some oriental fashion inspiration, as Zac Posen, Dries Van Noten and Christopher Kane all looked East for interesting prints and dramatic patterns. If you aren’t brave enough to dip yourself in chinoiserie head to toe, look at working an obe belt into your look.

Black leather might be more easily associated with saddles, but Valentino and Calvin Klein all used the dominatrix hide on their runways. Try a leather blazer with a fur stole around the collar to avoid looking like you’ve enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey just a little bit too much.

Winter florals are a luxe trends you can command to wear this autumn winter, think heavy overlays and powerful colours. Burberry are all over flowers this Autumn Winter. Or  should I say flowers are all over Burberry…

Racing glamour has hit the mainstream, so why not work in some of this season’s more interesting trends. Go on…you know you’ll like taking a punt.
