The Beauty Guide to Ladies Day

20 Mar

As part of our ‘Interview With The Experts’ series, beauty blogger Sinead Smith shares her tips to getting perfectly prepped and preened for Ladies Day, from ensuring your tan is more Ascot than Aintree, to how to involve colours from your make up to your outfit.

The Beauty Guide to Ladies Day

For most of us, Ladies Day is one of the few events each year where we can get dolled up to the nines and enjoy a day of full-on glamour. Once the dress, hat, shoes and accessories are out of the way, it is time to focus on beauty. We have the lowdown on everything from how to achieve the perfect faux glow to creating the chicest make-up look so that you look and feel your best this Ladies Day!

The Perfect Tan

If you aren’t lucky enough to have a natural glow and don’t want to look too pasty and pale, fake tan is a must. The most important part of the tanning process is actually the preparation so, use the week beforehand to prime your skin and to ensure a flawless fake tan finish.

Exfoliation is the key to a smooth and even false tan application. Over the week prior to your Ladies Day, lightly scrub the skin to keep it soft and flake free.

It is important to use an oil-free exfoliator as many products will contain nourishing oils which, for prep purposes, we want to avoid. These oils, while hydrating, will leave a residue on the skin which can cause the tan to separate and dry patchily. You can easily (and cheaply) make your own oil-free scrub by purchasing a tub of Epsom Salts from the chemist.

Where there is exfoliation there must also be moisturisation so, follow up each scrubbing with a good layer of hydrating body cream. Again, avoid oil-based products. La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP is a light, non-greasy moisturiser that will leave skin super smooth.

An Array of Shades

A patchwork tan may sound like the stuff of nightmares but, rest assured it makes sense! The skin on your arms may not have the same needs as the skin on your legs so, don’t be afraid to mix and match tans to get a perfect finish for the big day.

For drier skins, choose cream based tans like Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Leg Make-Up while oilier skins can get away with drier mousse formulas like Garnier Ambre Solaire No Streaks Bronzer Self-Tanning Mousse. Remember; the Irish weather is unpredictable at best so, always use a waterproof formulation!

Getting Made Up

For the true Ladies Day look, you must think effortless and understated glamour. You don’t want your make-up to look garish, rather you want it to subtly complement the focal point of your appearance; your hat and/or your outfit.

If you have cash to splash, treat yourself to a professional makeover on the morning of and give them a brief of soft, neutral shades for eyes and skin that healthily glows.

If a DIY makeover is on the cards, be sure to do a trial run or two to figure out shades and to avoid making mistakes on the morning of Ladies Day. For a perfect neutral look, Urban Decay’s Naked palette and Sleek’s Au Naturel palette are packed full of a great mix of neutral shades to see you through from just a shimmer on the lids to a full-on smokey eye.

If subdued isn’t your style, add a pop of colour with a great bold lipstick in a complementary shade to your outfit. For summer, we love MAC Candy Yum Yum and Avon Perfect Kiss in the shade Make Out Red.

Nail That Look

Whether it is in the real world or on the Oscars red carpet, nails have become the pièce de résistance of any outfit and Ladies Day should be no different.

Nail art is a great way to inject some cheeky fun into your look while nail wraps, like these ones from Sally Hansen, are an easy way to achieve an intricate looking manicure.

If classic polish is more your speed, consider a shade that either stands out; think neons, bright reds and burnt oranges, or matches your lipstick to play into the lips n’ tips trend that has graced the runways for the last few seasons.
